Ruined Stock

I was disappointed to find this in my freezer! Two recently frozen jars of homemade chicken stock. I was surprised this happened; I specifically made sure NOT to fill them too full because I have had this happen to me before with pea soup.

I always put my soups/stocks into plastic ziploc containers. That is really frustrating though because you spend time making the stock, and then you expect to have it on hand. Hopefully you weren't needing it right when you found it.

i usually put it in ziplock bags too, but this time i decided to put it in the glass.... of course :) no i wasn't needing it. just stretching the chicken for all it was worth!

do you freeze it with the lid on or off? if you leave it off it might make a difference. then once its frozen, you can put the lid back on.

hmm I always leave lots of air room in the top of the jar. but I hope this doesnt happen to mine!!

I don't think leaving the lid off would have made a difference. The stock didn't push up on the lid when it froze, it pushed out.

Well, that last comment of mine shows how much physics knowledge I have! :) NONE! My husband was gracious enough to explain that it actually WOULD make a difference if I left the lid off. I will leave future physics lessons up to him when the kids are ready :)
